target identification

Target Identification

Drug discovery is a complex, time-consuming and very costly process. Currently, the pharmaceutical industry is in a period of crisis due to the low number of drug approvals relative to the high levels of R & D investment. Knowing the cellular targets of drugs is crucial if the process of drug discovery is to be made more efficient. Identifying the full spectrum of targets associated with a bioactive small molecule can lead to faster optimization, understanding of off-target side effects and the ability to minimize possible toxicities early on in the process. Improving the quality of target selection is the single most important factor for transforming industry productivity and bringing innovative new medicines to patients. Hence, the objective of the Target Identification group is to identify targets that clearly play a role in the disease process. Target identification methods provide a finer degree of detail than target screening and require evidence that the gene/ protein is correlated with the disease.
